- Willie Mays made spectacular plays in
- the outfield throughout his career. His
- most memorable occurred in Game 1 of
- the 1954 World Series, with his Giants
- playing the Cleveland Indians.
-
- With the score tied, 2-2, and two men on
- in the eighth inning, the IndiansΓÇÖ Vic Wertz
- hit a long fly to deep centerfield in the
- Polo Grounds (the GiantsΓÇÖ home field).
- Willie took off after the ball and, with his
- back to the infield, made an incredible
- over-the-shoulder catch nearly 440 feet
- from home plate. He spun around and
- fired the ball back to the infield. The
- IndiansΓÇÖ scoring threat was stopped and
- the Giants went on to sweep the World
- Series.
